How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce established the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It's made up of 2,711 stars, which are embedded in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.
To become a HWOF member, you need to submit a name to Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They then submit your details to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. You will also receive a bronze plaque engraved with your name. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.
You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they do, they will send a letter explaining their decision to the applicant at his/her home address. A second letter confirms acceptance if the nominee accepts the nomination. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the application submitted by the artist or organization. The fee is then paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at $12.50. After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due is dependent on the number of years since you were first recognized. If you were first nominated for a nomination in 1990, your owe $15,000. You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.
If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.
How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?
You must be at the least 18 year old to be nominated. A person must be present at the time of receiving a star. A star can be renominated after 10 years.
