How to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 1960 established the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It has 2,711 stars embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.

To become a HWOF member, you need to submit a name to Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They then submit your details to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.

If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. The person who accepts the nomination will receive a second confirmation letter. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce then sends $25 to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues the Hollywood Chamber of commerce a check, payable to it. The check is sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays artists or organizations whose applications were accepted. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.

Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. To be eligible for the HWOF, the artist must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce any balance. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.

To remove yourself from HWOF, contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They will help you pay the remaining debt. They will remove your name from this list.

How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?

When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. To receive a star, one must be alive at that time. After receiving a stars, one could still be nominated after ten more years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. If there are no known living relatives, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place the memorial marker in front of it.

Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?

The HWOF was not created to be a historical landmark. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.

What happened with the stars that were stolen? The thieves stole approximately 1,200 stars. Each star weighs approximately 250-300 pounds, which equates to 4 tons of stars.
