FAQ

Why is Hollywood calling this Hollywood?

D.W. Griffith created the first movie industry in California in 1887. It was named in honor of its Los Angeles location, known at the time as "Hollywood".

The name stuck because it was such an exciting place for people to visit. People would come from all over just to see what was happening there.

Hollywood is an important part of culture today. There are movies, TV shows, music videos and commercials. We call them all "Hollywood."

Is Hollywood more important than Bollywood?

Producing a movie that is well-received by the public is the biggest challenge for film producers.

Problem is, there are many films competing for viewers' time and money. And if you don't stand out from the crowd, you won't have much chance of getting watched.

But what makes a movie great? What makes an actor famous or a director? Or a director? It's more than talent, it's also luck. The best actors may be the best, but they will not succeed if they are writing bad scripts.

Films can be divided into two categories: blockbuster films with large budgets or independent productions. Producing and distributing blockbuster movies can cost hundreds of millions. These movies are often made by large studios that want their films to reach as many people as possible. But, these high-budget films are more appealing to older audiences.

Independent films can be smaller productions funded by individuals or groups. These films are often targeted at niche markets and appeal to particular tastes. These films are often less expensive to produce or market. But, they aren't necessarily cheaper to view. Most indie films are difficult to find.

The question is: Do we really need both types of movies? Is it necessary to have both blockbuster and independent movies? Hollywood is much bigger than Bollywood. That's because Hollywood produces almost twice as many movies per year as India does!

Can I create my own distribution organization?

No. No.

Even though you may not be distributing other people's films, you still have to follow certain rules.

For example, you can't charge different prices to different theaters. Additionally, fees cannot be charged to different customers.

It is also against the law to sell your services or products to other companies.

Why is it that so few independent films are ever released?

Indie filmmakers often assume that distributors will pick up their films.

They are certain distributors will take their films, as they know that the public will love them.

However, this is rarely the case. Distributors often benefit from independent filmmakers.

They use tactics such as delaying a film's release date until after awards season has ended.

They might delay the release of low-budget films until after the summer blockbuster series has begun.

Distributors may also keep films from the public until people have already spent hundreds of money on tickets, popcorn or candy.

After all, they don't want to lose out on those profits.

To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
