FAQ

How many films does Hollywood make in a given year?

The number of films produced by Hollywood studios each year is approximately 3,000. That's right, three thousand!

Hollywood spends billions to advertise for these movies. They spend millions on their production. They also spend millions marketing them. How many end up being released in theaters?

Most likely, the answer is around 200-300. What happens then to the 2,700+ remaining films? They are either distributed as direct-to–video releases or simply left in storage.

Some of them may not be seen. Some of them are available for distribution via Netflix and Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus or iTunes, Google Play, and others.

Why don't they get more? They are not being released in theaters. They're too costly to produce.

They would be released in theaters if they were less expensive to produce.

I can help. I can help guide you in the best way possible to put your movie in theaters.

I will show you how to maximize the return on your investment (ROI), and increase your chances of seeing your film in theaters.

Let's face facts...

It can be difficult to get your movie into theaters. The process is long, complex and full of legalities.

It might also cost you a lot before you start.

The time frame in which your film can be distributed is also very limited.

There isn't enough time in between the time a movie is finished and when its theatrical run starts.

What happens if my film does not perform well at the box-office?

A film that does poorly at the box-office could lead to many problems.

You might want to change the marketing of your film.

Second, you might decide to rework the script.

Third, you might consider adding characters.

You might also decide to delete some characters.

Fifth, you might choose to cut scenes.

Sixth, you might decide that the film wasn't worth making.

Are foreign sales worth more to Hollywood than domestic?

Yes, but not very much. Around 17% of total revenue came from foreign sources in 2017. 83% of domestic revenues were generated in 2017.

In fact, overseas markets account for over half of the world's population.

This means that people who may never have the chance to see a movie at home might still be curious about your movie.

Statistics

  • New York Times article stated that only 15% of the top films in 2013 had women in lead acting roles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • At his encouragement, his sister Sarah Luke, brother-in-law Elisha Luke, with her mother, Azubah, took the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad from Ogden to Los Angeles in November 1885, according to Adrian Weekly Press, November 13, 1885. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • If we translate this to a percentage, we get 28%, so let's be generous and say that ‘Hollywood studios' release about ⅓ of the movies released in the U.S. and Canada each year. (glitteratilobotomy.com)
  • Women account for 51 percent of moviegoers. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • The percentage of black female characters went from 16 percent in 2017 to 21 percent in 2018. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF can be found at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.

To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.

If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee evaluates the nominations and decides whether to approve them. If they do, they will send a letter explaining their decision to the applicant at his/her home address. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce then sends $25 to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a check payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which sends the check to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The other half goes to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Once an artist has received their star, he/she is eligible to be listed in the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. If you were first nominated for a nomination in 1990, your owe $15,000. You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.

You will need to contact Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be removed from the HWOF. They will remove your name from this list.

How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?

You must be at the least 18 year old to be nominated. To be eligible for a star, you must still be alive. A star can be renominated after 10 years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

You can be nominated by your family members to receive a star. If there are no known living relatives, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place the memorial marker in front of it.

Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?

The HWOF doesn't intend to be historical monument. It's meant to be a tribute to those who have contributed to film history.

What happened with the stars that were stolen? Around 1,200 stars were taken by the thieves. Each star weighs between 250 and 300 lbs. This makes it approximately 4 tons!
