How To
How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF is located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. It has 2,711 stars embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.
To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with your name inscribed on it is also included. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.
A current HWOF member can nominate you for a star or if you have made significant contributions in movies, television or radio. A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays artists or organizations whose applications were accepted. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.
Once an artist has received their star, he/she is eligible to be listed in the HWOF. To be eligible to list on the HWOF you will need to pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce all outstanding balance. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.
If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.
How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?
When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. To receive a Star, one must still be living at the time. One can still be nominated after receiving a star after ten years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
Your family members can nominate you for a star. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.
Why not use a new street, instead of staring at everyone?
The HWOF was not created to be a historical landmark. It is meant to honor those who contributed to film history.
