How to get a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 1960 established the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It's made up of 2,711 stars, which are embedded in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.
To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.
A current HWOF member can nominate you for a star or if you have made significant contributions in movies, television or radio. The nominations are evaluated by a committee, which then decides whether or not to approve them. If they decide to approve, they write a letter to the address of the applicant explaining their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.
The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then pays half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.
After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. To be listed on the HWOF, you must pay the remaining balance owed to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due is dependent on the number of years since you were first recognized. If you were first nominated for a nomination in 1990, your owe $15,000. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.
You will need to contact Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be removed from the HWOF. They will remove the name of your from the list.
How old must one be to get a HWOF star
When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. To receive a Star, one must still be living at the time. After receiving a Star, one can still be Nominated for another star after ten Years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
Family members may nominate you to be a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.
Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?
